You are ahead in the race but your distribution is yucky. Paying later makes it even more yucky, since you'll probably have to pay anyway, but be even worse off distributionally for the race. His front position isn't going to break, so I don't see any motivation from the other side to wait either. I'd leave the 6 shots now and play mainly for the nobody-hits-anybody race.
