With all due respect to you and whom ever said this, this statement is some of the worst advice imaginable for most plays and results in playing too safely since there's the ever present fear of a 35-1 or 17-1 joker. Far better is to plan your plays for what is considerably more likely to occur.

Failure to hit 6/1* here is probably a big Whopper. If you don't hit here, the opp is likely anchor on the bar pt and you'll soon have to blot or hit loose inside to try to bring the position home anyhow.

MUCH better to attack now and simply butcher your opp if he dances and also have fun if he rolls 54 or 56. If he hits with anything other than 11 his forward position isn't yet strong and in the melee you may pick up that blot on his bar pt.

I don't know which play wins more games but I suspect hitting does, but certainly I know which play wins lots more gammons.
