Not true. It gains a ton of extra gammons. Also downside is relatively small. He is not well positioned to play containment game without outfield coverage.

You should consider. Sure. But it doesn't mean you should follow it all the time. Consider this: Opening roll 52 [hmm, maybe I shouldn't split, so he can't blitz me with 55. Or another: 51S-55 [hmm, maybe I shouldn't blitz, so he can't anchor with 54].

Anyway, even if he rolls 11, making an instant prime, that's not end of the world. You will have one checker back VS three + still ahead in the race = Plenty of winning chances.
