In 1994 a Bulgarian engneer from Plovdiv and his wife (also engineer) proposed to me the same idea. He had worked on it for many years and made the tool to play parralel backgammon (two games with mirror dice on one board). The board had two sets of checkers - big and small; two tracks of 24 points one inside other and a rim between them not to mix checkers. I did not approve the idea, but I gave him the address of Chairman of WBF Mr. Alberto da Pra to report his invention. I played some games and it felt tike playing simultaneous games in chess - less concentration and more hurry than normal games. With so many idiotic games coming out every day the game should be in the upper half :).
The idea is borrowed from mirror (duplicate?) bridge competitions, but is irrelevant to backgammon.
