I think it is pretty uncommon, although I agree with you that it is useful to understand the theme either way. One important difference between the two positions is that a gap on the second-highest point is much less dangerous than a gap on the third-highest point. I'm not sure if it is ever right to clear the 4-point against a single anchor when there are still checkers on both the 5 and 6.
