We want (1) not to miss (2) use missing numbers as efficiently as possible (3) get the most out of our next best numbers -- 5's and 4's, since we still have checkers on those points, and (4) get the most out of our doublets, our best numbers. Those points aren't necessarily in order. Since we're way behind, we need to roll our best numbers and use them well to win.
6/off 3/1 stacking on the ace point has to be worst. Is it ever right to voluntarily ply a deuce 3/1?
Next worst is 6/off 4/2, which trades one gap for another. Look what our missing 4's now do -- stack on the ace point.
6/4 5/off -- all numbers bear off and we can play a 2 4/2. But
6/off 5/3 is best. (1) only 2's -- a bad number -- miss (2) we can often use a 2 played 4/2 to fill the gap (3) all numbers except 2's bear off and (4) 3-3 now bear off 4 checkers, and 4-4 bears off 3. Compare: 6/off 3/1 -- 4-4 bears off 2 checkers and 3-3 only 1; 6/off 4/2 -- 4-4 and 3-3 bear off 2 checkers; 6/4 5/off -- 4-4 bears off 3 checkers and 3-3 only 1 (compensated only a little by 2-2 now bearing off a second checker).
