Good analysis. In general a gap on the 2pt isn't that bad if we have a checker on the 4pt (and a gap on the 3pt isn't that bad if we have a checker on the 6pt). That consideration should be enough to eliminate 6/off 4/2 from consideration whether we're ahead or behind.

My first instinct here was to play 6/4 5/off, keeping a spare on the 4pt so we can accommodate both 2's and 4's, until I noticed that we were behind in the race. Perhaps 6/4 5/off is best if we're winning? Though of course it wastes a pip.
