Hyphen preference is also illustrated there, yes, but might need further clarifications:
1. If I shorten "five point prime" to "five-prime", I use the hyphen, but not if I spell it out. In general, when writing for backgammon cognoscenti, I like five-prime, six-prime etc. better than the spelled-out form, but it's not a big deal to me. For beginners and others who haven't read much yet, I think spelling it out clarifies it a bit.
2. Another case where I'd use a hyphen: "Slot the 3 point with one of those 5-point spares." In other words, when it's an adjective instead of a noun.
