Both plays leave a direct shot, so I don't understand why the first play leads to more efficient cubes.
If I were willing to spend twenty minutes or so of study, I would go through all of White's rolls and examine what XG thinks the cube action is in each case. This would give a feel for your question as well as possibly uncover misplays that might skew the rollout results,
Also, why is 7/3 7/2, leaving an extra blot on the bar, so much better than 7/2 6/2 (regardless of cube position)?
Well, you already saw my suggestion for what it's worth. Because of White's crappy board, the downside of leaving a blot is greatly reduced, so you should be comparing the upsides, and it seems fairly clear that the upside of 7/3 7/2* is greater.
