Daily Quiz 10/4

1. My first inclination is to play 8/5(2) 6/3(2) to prepare for a fight. The downside is that it leaves our rear checkers somewhat vulnerable. White has four builders waiting to pounce on our 20pt blot, and if we don't touch our checkers on the 24pt, they might get primed. So that's an argument for making an advanced anchor. Using our whole roll to play 24/18(2) seems weak, so the options seem to be 24/21(2) 8/5(2) or 24/21(2) 6/3(2) or 24/21(2) 10/7(2). On the second roll of the game, it's typically right to play C (24/21(2) 8/5(2)) when White has brought checkers down to her outer board, so I'll guess that that's right idea here. 24/21(2) 8/5(2).

2. A pip count of 120 versus 132 would normally be D/T in a straight race. It should be a take here too. My guess is that there's not too much equity involved in the doubling decision, but I'd double since Blue should lose his market if he clears the midpoint, and at the same time, not much can go wrong for Blue in the next exchange except losing a huge number of pips in the race.

3. The candidates seem to be 11/2*, 13/9 11/6, and 23/18 13/9. Blue doesn't have the timing for a backgame, so he should be looking for opportunities to activate his back checkers. So I think 23/18 13/9 is the right idea strategically, but tactically it looks dubious. White needs 3's and 5's to escape the back checker and 1's, 4's, and 6's to hit on her bar point, so it seems that 23/18 diversifies White's rolls rather nicely. I'll try 11/2*. We don't mind too much getting another checker sent back, and it gains a tempo to consolidate our position and prevent White from using her whole roll.
