Most of the roulette clockers used computers, but in the English case there was a member on the team (a friend of my brother's) who could clock a wheel by eyeballing it, and demonstrated the skill in court.

I remember the story about the fire. I heard that the fire chief said to the TD after the blaze was put out: "It wasn't too bad, only three boards burned. I didn't know backgammon was an electronic game."

The guy you are thinking of was named Tencel (I think that spelling is correct). There were rumors that he died, and other rumors that he was sighted after he died.
