The formula breaks down a bit when one or or both sides have a lower wastage position than a low wastage race. The leader would do better than D^2/S indicates. But the adjustments are giving a larger EPC difference than is actually the case which balances that and gives an overall fairly close win %. If one has good EPC estimation techniques (from reference positions for example) the adjustments are obviated. But without that what is a good value for the extra checker adjustment. I think 2 is high if there are many checkers left.
