RIP Jay Whitehead

In the early eighties Jay was considered a top player. Maybe not WC, but someone who would probably have been seeded at most tournaments.

He was also the player who wanted to buy back in the Calcutta with food stamps. He was involved in a bizarre incident at one of Howard and Joanne's tournaments where he not only looked a gift horse in the mouth, he more or less climbed down its throat and emerged on the other end. (it involved waiving his late fees, and he insisted on knowing whether the non-existent fees would be added to the prize pool, insisted to the point of withdrawing from he tournament.)

I last saw him in October of 1983, when he and his troupe turned up early one Saturday morning (I was staying with Nack in San Francisco) to put on a skit for us. Sort of like posadas, except it was October, not December, and it was morning not night, and it was acting, not singing. Otherwise, just like posadas.
