It seems to me that rerolling both dice when one is cocked is already a standard procedure

It is. Except for that one time, at the beginning of the game, when both players are rolling. I mentioned it to be thorough, and also because the "reroll-both-when-one-is-cocked" action isn't a rule of intrinsic merit that emerges naturally from common sense; it seems more like a convention for the sake of consistency.

Players agree on checker color

Not only should we agree on checker color (you play Blue, I play Red), but we should also agree on which checker color is 'dark'. However, checker color agreement is less important than agreement about home boards and dark dice, in the sense that it can be resolved after rolling without affecting the NGS starting position. By contrast, if we roll first and then decide which direction the checkers will move, the NGS starting position will be sensitive to our decision.

Sidenotes:

  • Checker color designations can be avoided altoghether, as long as you have a way to consistently identify each player. Named colors serve that function, but may not apply to the actual equipment of the reader. I resorted to 'you' and 'your opponent', although I dislike the 2nd person pronouns and often seek alternatives. I'm getting soft on that (especially for instructions, where the subject 'you' is often implied anyway).
  • Instructions for the Home Board half checker placement refer first to Dark checkers, then to Light, and ultimately to mirroring. I don't see the advantage of this approach over targeting all instructions at 1 color\player, followed by the full mirror for the opponent. (but I suspect there is one)
  • Note to self: Be careful when rolling the final step of NG900, when the pips on the dice no longer represent corresponding points on the board.
