For 8/7*/5, you can get by with L (on assumption), but for that family strict usage is L for 8/7* 8/6 (as you suspected) and lower-case "l" for 8/7*/5, based on the 6pt convention.

The O family is in the same boat. O = 8/7* 8/6, and o = 8/7*/5. You might prefer "o" to "l" if for no other reason than because the latter looks like the numeral "1" in some fonts.

I prefer to use "5" (5pt) for the play, applying "hit" of the hit/most/6 rule.
