There is a difference between tournament play and what I'll call pick-up games. In a tournament, you don't have a choice about who you play. Some players prefer to only play others who are close to their own rating. It does not seem fair to force these players to put ratings points on the line in a match they would not play in the pick-up setting.

Well maybe, just maybe, these players shouldn't enter any tournaments at all if they are so scared of losing few rating points and lowering their artificially inflated ratings.

In any case, IIBGF and GridGammon rating are two separate things (aren't they?), so a tournament valid for IIBGF should not be mandatorily valid also for GridGammon ratings.

Yes, they are two separate things but in order to play in Master Norm IIBGF tourney (for example) you have to be rated 1800+ on Grid Gammon. (Leo, please correct me if I am wrong)
So GridGammon ratings ARE important in that particular sense and it is therefore perfectly logical to play rated matches. If (for whatever reason) you lose most of your IIBGF Master Norm matches you obviously deserve to have a lower GG rating, possibly forbidding you to play in future Master Norm tourneys. If you keep playing unrated how is your rating ever going to be real? You are just fooling yourself.
