?Online tournament rule

For your consideration, you may be familiar with the IBA (International Backgammon Alliance) -- http://www.iba-backgammon.com -- which has been running online tournaments for about a decade. Their rule on rated matches currently is:

Rated matches may be played IF approved by both opponents. Players are expected to check the match settings carefully before accepting.

Previously (before 2002, I think), their rule was that all IBA tournament matches be unrated. Their reasons for that rule and for changing to the current rule were (I quote from http://www.iba-backgammon.com/ibaforum/showthread.php?t=6):

(1) We find that higher rated players tend to refuse to play the lower rated players in open play. Therefore, the opportunity to improve skills is limited.

(2) We want all players of all skill levels to benefit from participating in IBA

(3) We find new players are intimidated by high ratings. "I am not as good as these players. I am afraid to try."

(4) Although free, guest membership is guaranteed for IBA members at Playmaker-World, there is no guarantee that the ELO ratings will remain available to non-members (guests) of Playmaker-World in the future. (IBA has already expressed its desire for them to continue.)

(5) In lieu of gaining ratings for wins, IBA rewards it's members with IBA Winner Points.

(6) At Playmaker-World, you Host cannot tell if your match is rated or not. And, with the exception of the above, we don't really care. That tells me, at least for now, the choice could be optional. When you send your match invitation, you could check rated. When you receive a rated match invitation, you can either accept it or uncheck Rated to make it an unrated match.
