In Response To: OT - Poker Ethics? (Stick)

Poker players lying about their hand? Good Lord, what is the world coming to?

It's an interesting slippery slope given that most people would agree that Freitez's sharp tactics are out of line. Still, I don't see anything wrong with Tony G's behavior on this one even though it won't win him any friends.

Poker players use deception all the time through their table talk, their mannerisms, their silence. That's part of the game. Hellmuth failed to see that Tony G looked at his hand and then chose to believe Tony G's response to his question. Players facing a decision often say things or ask the other player questions attempting to get a read by observing how the other player responds (or doesn't respond). That's what Hellmuth did here, and he got fooled. Oh, well, that's poker.

Regardless, this all seems pretty academic to me since Phil has a fairly standard call ($15K to win $21.6K) based solely on Tony G's likely hand ranges.
