Instead of straddling why wouldn't the player not look at his cards first and then bet to start the action like straddling would or not bet if he has shit? Is there some strategic gain in the rules he gets by doing it blindly?
If you don't straddle and simply blind bet without telling anyone you do not get to act last preflop. That's one of the key components to straddling, it gives you position preflop. Looking at your cards and folding if you don't have shit is called normal poker, that's no fun.
You say that only the player to the left of the BB can straddle so is there actually a rule that the next player must look at his cards before betting?
Again, it varies from casino to casino but I believe the most widely accepted rule is that only the player left of the big blind post may straddle. Now, if that person straddles the player to the left of him may re-straddle as we see in this video. Restraddling costs you twice as much as the regular straddle. The same as if there were 3 straddles for some insane reason the third person to do so would have to put in 2x what the double straddler did.
There is no rule that you ever have to look at your cards during a hand. You can play blind all day long if you like.
