Cardinals have been hitting dreadfully, especially with men on base. Berkman is a pro hitter who is also skillful in the outfield. Given that the Cards were just about empty on the bench, it would have been insane to take Berkman out in either situation.

Of course they should have bunted those men over with nobody out. The Rangers won a game in this series on two sacrifice flies. If the bunt works, they could score two crucial runs on outs. Or score the runner from second on a single to right, since Cruz was still in, and he probably would have massacred the play.
