I too would much rather see a clear board diagram as Phil and Neil suggest. The live feeds I have seen recently just don't make it.

However, nothing says you couldn't have an additional little window with a camera feed of the players, sometimes cutting to closueps, the crowd, the commentators, or any other shot that would make it interesting, much like other TV coverage. However, the big window would have the board diagram. That would really convey the "live" element.
