'He brought in a pitcher in Game 5 to issue an intentional walk? And then pulled him? If the first reliever couldn't intentionally walk someone then he shouldn't be playing.'
This can be a correct strategy. Say a great batter is up that you want to walk and the next batter is a lefty that is strong against right-handed pitchers, but has trouble against lefties.
As the manager you are concerned that if you allow the current pitcher to walk the batter and then bring in the lefty to face the left-handed batter, the other team may pinch-hit a right-handed batter and you will be forced to pitch to him, since a pitcher must face at least one batter after he enters the game. OTOH, if you bring the lefty in to issue the intentional walk, now the other manager must decide whether to leave his left-handed batter in the game to face the left-handed pitcher or pinch-hit with a right-handed batter, knowing that you can bring in a right-handed pitcher to face him.
By bringing in the lefty to issue the intentional walk, you put yourself in control of the situation.
