Your parenthetical about ending the inning is not needed correct? Just any out is enough to be allowed to change pitchers.
No, the batter must complete his plate appearance or the third out must be recorded for you to be able to change pitchers. It can't just be *any* out. If the new pitcher picks somebody off but it is not the third out, then you can't change pitchers.
While on the subject is there any limitations on switching the side from which you are batting, switching a player from pitcher to field and back to pitcher (other than a pitcer having to pitch to at least one batter or recording one out)?
A bit more complicated, but yes, you can switch a pitcher to the field and then back to pitcher for the next batter. Once in a GREAT while somebody tries this.
