Your question is valid and I won't attempt to answer it in full here. Every backgame is different. It is hopefully clear to you that when playing against the 20/21 backgame you will employ a far different strategy than when playing against the backgame we have here for example, the 22/24 backgame.
While the backgame here isn't perfectly timed it's not the worst one could hope for. (though our double aces helped us in the timing department) If you find yourself playing against a perfectly timed backgame of the 22/24 nature you're basically saying you can't prime it so what you want to do is clear all your outer board points safely and keep your spares on the highest points.
One key thing to do when bearing in against certain backgames is to notice how your numbers play. For example against the 22/24 game once are men are all in our inner board we obviously want to have spares on our five point because all our fives and played 5/off. We won't want to blot so we need spares there. We also don't want to clear the 5pt before the 6pt creating a phantom 20/22/24 backgame so that's another argument for spares on the 5pt. Our sixes will play dandy though we'll want to clear the 6pt first.
What about 4s? They're playable 6/2 but we'd rather not end up stacking our 2pt with a bunch of dilly checkers. So it looks like against a perfectly timed 22/24 game that we have no hope of cracking we want to prepare to clear our 6pt by keeping our spares on our other higher points, the 5pt and 4pt.
That's the shortest answer I can give and in the upcoming months I actually have group lessons planned covering various types of backgames.
