I'm guessing that White thought his back men were so exposed that he had to hit to gain a tempo. Once he'd decided on 13/5*, he found 6/2 as the last 4.

One of Barclay Cooke's Paradoxes and Probabilities positions had a similar theme and Cooke got it wrong. I forget the exact position. It's in Classic BG Revisited. 41 to play, with the choices being to make a new point (4 point or 9 point) or to hit opponent's lone back checker loose (6/1* on a two-point 6,5 board). On the other side, opponent is threatening something or other, so Cooke wanted to gain the tempo with 6/1*. I seem to remember that it may have been a Whopper Junior, certainly not a Whopper With Cheese as here. Anyway, with the information given, someone who has CBR or P&P handy will be able to locate the exact position.
