I don't know all the hard and fast rules but perhaps I can explain a bit of what they did in Madison.

They played eight preliminary rounds. The first round was a blind draw. The second round all 1-0's played each other and all 0-1's played each other. The third round all 2-0's played each other, 1-1's played each other, and 0-2's played each other. This pattern continued through eight rounds -- though once a player had four losses, he/she was eliminated from further rounds.

Bill Davis was the only 8-0 player, David Rockwell was the only 7-1 player. Davis was guaranteed a spot in the final. Rockwell was guaranteed a spot in a "semifinal". All the 6-2's played a single elimination bracket to get to face Rockwell for the right to face Davis.

Had there been two 7-1's and no 8-0, then, I believe, the 7-1's would have been in opposite semifinals playing two remaining 6-2's from a drawn playoff bracket.

Everyone 6-2 and better made the playoffs and they try to give one round advantage in the playoff bracket for each loss less than 2. Thus, in this specific case, Davis's bye to the final and Rockwell's bye to a 'semi-final'.

The consolation bracket was formed by a draw of all players 5-3 after the preliminary rounds. Losers from the championship playoff bracket, except for the 'semi-finalists', fell into the progressive consolation bracket and continued play toward the consolation championship.
