Hitting is not only safer in this position, it should increase your gammon/match wins. When White enters immediately (without hitting), you will have gained 5 pips, and in case he fans, you gain a turn or more in addition. Your checkers are well distributed to avoid trouble in the follow up, so the longer White stay out, the better it is for you.

Winning a gammon will lock up the match. Go for it.
