It looks like a great format for me. At least four matches are guarantee.You can lost all four matches. In standard bracket format with consolation you have to win two matches to play four matches entirely.

If I ever go to States to play in backgammon tournament I think I will try this one. And entry fee is $250 for 1st division as I recall correctly! In Europe it is between 500-700 Euros for 1st division. (I don't talk about Monte Carlo. It is exception.)

Second division in Europe is 200-300 Euros. I have no idea why is such difference between entry fees between America and Europe and didn't find any discussion about that. Maybe someone have any idea?
