What did you play? I think the way to go about learning from a position like this is to start by articulating the reasons for your play.

If we're given that the race is a dominant consideration here, then it seems that bar/21 23/20 is the natural play; otherwise your rear checkers could get trapped and you could disconnect yourself and crunch.

The reason I rejected it was because of the joker doublets, but perhaps that's not enough of a factor. If I were to try to learn from this position, I would try adjusting the position to tip the balance of jokers versus the race in the opposite direction to see if I could make another play come out on top.

Similarly, if you articulate your own rationale then you can try to figure out how to adjust the position to explore the balance between the race and the factors that you thought were more important.
