Thanks Tim. I look forward to your answers and will try and be more active on the daily quizzes. I suggest you wait at least 2 days (3 is better) before posting the answers.
1. I hope this one gets written up cuz I got no clue chief. Before looking at plays I suppose the question is how do we win this game?
A) We hold the prime and hope he cracks.
B) We escape and hope he can’t attack and escape at the same time.
C) We try to attack and escape at the same time.
D) Attack and hope he cracks
A) Holding the prime with something 12/5 seems unlikely to work. He has 5’s and 6’s to run one man while small numbers (barring double 3 or 4) play ok inside. The creative play 12/6, 3/2* also seems unlikely to work. We might like it if he rolls an immediate ace from the bar, but what if he hits us with a deuce? Then we got three back to his two while he has 5’s and 6’s to escape. And when he dances we are faced with the difficult task of attacking and escaping at the same time. 8/2*/1* seems wrong for similar reasons.
B) Running could well be right since 1-6 doesn’t grow on trees. Pretty scary though, as white has you outgunned 13-1 on that side of the board. And when you lose, you may end up getting G-balled with 2 or 3 men closed out. His 5’s and 6’s are duplicated but I am not sure how much of a factor this is.
C) 24/23, 8/2*I don’t understand this play really. Looks like a disaster when it fails.
D) 8/2*, 3/2. A ‘two way’ game. He could roll an ace and crack before we do. Or we could get lucky and escape while he dances. Both of these possibilities seem pretty slim though.
My instinct is to run here. 24/17 is my play, seems like the best chance to win.
2. Pointing on the 2-point looks wrong. White is happy after any 3 or 5 from the bar. Looks like the key battle right now is for the 5-point. So hitting loose there 11/5* is a must. 16/11 is a logical follow up, giving a direct 6 to cover. Best when white rolls bad but how often is that really? I tap two with 11/5*, 8/2*. This seems the most likely way to win the 5-point, even if we get hit. (11/5*, 8/3* is also possible but I would like to keep the 4-prime in case the attack fails.) So, 11/5*, 8/3*
3. I don’t feel an urgent need to get my back guys moving. Also, I don’t want to split into those chimney stacks. I think I should keep the ace-point and do something else. 13/8, 6/5 unstacking is possible. On the other hand, white is stacked and stripped. No need to give him good 2’s for free. There is a very good chance White will be leaving shots next turn so perhaps we should sit tight with 13/7 and force White to perform? That’s my play – the wimpy 13/7.
