Don't you just love the turn-arounds that are possible in a game of backgammon!

First things first: there is no way to make the 4pt with this roll. Second: let's be safe, and jump out to the 16pt. Next: the 9pt has blocking power. So, play 13/9, and clean up two blots in the process.

Finally, the only real question: should we go all-out to make the 4pt by risking a 17-to-1 shot on the 10pt? Or will we do better to stay out range by playing up to the 14pt with the checker we just moved to the 16pt?

If we stay back, we'll have four builders trained on the 4pt, and no chance to be hit by White. There are 15 rolls that make the 4pt next time (11 33 55 12 13 15 23 25 35). If White jumps out to the outer board, we'll have a double shot.

Alternatively, we can slot the 10pt, and have 24 rolls to make the 4pt if we are not hit (11 22 33 55 12 13 15 16 23 25 26 35 36 56).

Because we still are trailing by 24 pips, I'll go all-out to make the 4pt now.

My vote: 18/16, 13/9, 12/10

Mike
