If non-commritment is a valuable alternative, i think it is a contender to think about it. A blitz with only nine men in the zone is for my gusto to anaemic, if there is something other. I'll go with Heinz von Foerster, who said "Handle stets so, dass die Anzahl der Möglichkeiten wächst". That isn't always right in backgammon, but a good explanation for the heart of "non-commitment" as a general playing principle. We aren't burning the race, and the doors for blocking/priming/ blitzing will be still open. And a new man in the zone. Splitting the back men has no urge. Offense first.
