The interesting thing in this position are the 2 extra checkers in the outfield needing 4 extra crossovers.

White needs at least 13 crossovers to get off the gammon, so taking one extra checker off for blue might get him to more gammons.

14 vs 13 crossovers instead off 15 vs. 13 crossovers.

But the white crossovers are big, the gammon pip count here is 50 vs. 65.

When played safe the effective pips are 48 vs. 65 with white to move

So in the gammonrace blue is a big favourite, about 80% i guess.

So the risk of 6/5 3off is not justified:

Of course making the 5-point and unstacking is important.

But should we allow white to make 4-prime.

And what about all the good moves for white after 8/5 6/5?

3 or 5 makes the 4-prime, 4 or 1 hits, 6 blitzes.

Pay now or pay later in a holding 5+ setting.

The pay now gives 5/36 hits.

The pay later ( 8/3 6/3) is stacking and gives up a builder for the 4-point.
