It does seem that there are some people who think that "skill" in playing a game means figuring things out with sheer brainpower and intuition, and that if you do a lot of memorization then that's memorization and not skill. They think that by changing the rules of a game so that all the stuff you've painstakingly memorized becomes worthless is a great way to make it more of a "game of skill."

That makes absolutely no sense to me, and my feeling is that this sort of attitude typically comes from people who can't, or won't, work at improving their game by memorizing important information (thereby putting an automatic ceiling on how skilful they can become).
