1/off(3) leaves us about 7 rolls ahead for winning the game, and 9 checkers still on the board. Although slotting the empty point with the last ace is the default play, we have no worries about losing the game from rolling too many aces. But if we can take 3 (or 4) checkers off next roll instead of two, we save a roll in the gammon race. If we play 5/4, fives doublets take 3 or more checkers off. If we play 2/1, only three doublets take 3 or more checkers off.
However, if we roll 3-3 our play doesn't matter. And if we roll 6-6 or 5-5, 2/1 is probably a little better. If we roll 2-2, 2/1 is better but we're likely to miss at least once since both the deuce and ace points would be empty. Only if our next roll is 4-4 is 2/1 best by enough to justify so much analysis ;-
1/off(3) 5/4.
