I didn't get a chance to chime in earlier, but this didn't look like an obvious decision at all to me. I've often been dinged in positions like this one for Pottling before I've done enough work up front (making home-board points and getting crossovers in to mitigate the risk of losing a gammon).

I think Yellow's 1pt contributes to the confusion. Those two checkers contribute a measly 2 pips to the pip count, making it seem like Yellow should run, but the 1pt doesn't help Yellow's board or crossover count much. In most positions with the same raw pip count but without those buried checkers, Yellow's forward position would be stronger and running would be clear.
