1. There are two plausible pay-later moves, 7/1 and 6/2 5/2. I see three plausible pay-now moves, 13/9* 12/9, 13/10 13/9*, and 12/9*/5. Of these, 13/9* 12/9 looks weakest, leaving 16 return shots and two blots. 13/10 13/9* leaves 17 return shots but clears the hardest point, while 12/9*/5 leaves only 8 return shots. In favor of paying now are: (1) White's return shots are indirect, giving us shots from the bar at her blot on the 5pt; (2) White's board is going to get stronger; (3) paying later either dumps two checkers behind the anchor or leaves a blot in our board, leaving us with a lot of problems in the future trying to clear our outside points. In favor of paying later are: (1) if we get hit back and don't hit back from the bar, then we're in serious trouble; (2) paying now doesn't exactly solve all our problems, and sends another White checker back where it can harass us. Tough call, but I'll go with 12/9*/5, giving White only 8 return shots and buying some flexibility.
2. We could pound away with 10/5* 8/4* but that leaves 6 blots and 20 return shots. It seems too loose when we have the weaker board, are leading in the race, and are leading 6a7a. If we don't hit then 13/8 is the 5 and then I don't see a 4 that I like better than 17/13.
3. With boxcars, I usually look for a solid move that gives good winning chances. However, we can't avoid leaving a lot of return shots. So I'll try for the blitz with 13/1*(2). Blitzing should be on our mind anyway at 4a3a.
