This seems like a rephrasing of Miran's original suggestion. Are there really that many people who would get as far as thinking about the odds quantitatively in this way and yet think that they're risking one point to potentially gain five? I guess it's possible, but it would surprise me.
Miran's second suggestion that people don't try to make any quantitative estimate and just think that 5a1a is "hopeless anyway" sounds more plausible to me than the suggestion that people go to the trouble of trying to put a number on it and get the wrong numbers.
