I like your second diagram, except that I think the pip count needs textual explanation; perhaps leaving the pip counts as they were in the original design is best. That would also leave room for the word "Crawford" when applicable.

I don't like the first option at all. Knowing the total number of points in the match is not relevant as far as the correct play goes, but from the point of view of someone providing full documentation of a match from an actual tournament, it is important information. Also, negative scores are confusing for casual users of the software. Similarly, not saying who is on roll seems confusing. Having the location of the text relative to the board be semantically crucial runs counter to the whole design here, which is predicated not on location (as the original design was) but on the principle that putting all the score information in one place is more readable.
