Miran's second suggestion that people don't try to make any quantitative estimate and just think that 5a1a is "hopeless anyway" sounds more plausible to me

Knowing players involved in my scenario (opponent, guy who said it is no double and easy take, other spectators), I know most of them think exactly that for 5a1a.
