Y (Yoga Split) Family

In a post from January 2010, Nack introduced the Y (Yoga split) Nactation family.

According to the definition at that time, Y (Yoga split) was 24/20(2) 13/9 8/4 in the position below. (The precise assignment depended whether one used assumptive Nactation or not. By assumption, Blue will make the 4pt, so the foregoing move gets the capital letter.)

In Octber 2011, however, Nack announced a comprehensive retooling of the Nactation system in a post entitled Nactation of Doublets (complete table). Under the updated rules, any play of doublets can be systematically assigned a Nactation. Along the way, twelve of the areal (i.e, area-based) families were split in two, creating regular and underlined versions of each. The Y (Yoga split) family was thus bifurcated.

As it happens, the play 24/20(2) 13/9 8/4 now falls into the underlined Y (Yoga split) family, but be forewarned. Of all the new families, this is the one Nack advises may undergo future redefinition. Nack writes in a post from October 2011, “For the tutorial update, I might toggle Y the other way to further simplify the mnemonic, even though that would mean two of the three Y options are underlined -- that minor detail is still under consideration.” Thus, Nack may swap the definitions of Y and Y.

*This is the deciding criterion. By the Hit Convention, most points in the home board outranks any hit.

K (Kill) Family

In the same position, Nack assigned K (Kill) as the Nactation of 13/5*/1* 8/4. Although the details of K (Kill) are still under consideration, it may be that this assignment also requires the assumption that Blue will make his 4pt. The tentative definition of K (Kill) for the updated Nactation Guide requires that the any part of a roll in a “killing” play that is not part of a hit should be used to play “down.” As always, playing down means to move a checker to or within the outer board.

Therefore, using non-assumptive Nactation, K is assigned to 13/5*/1* 13/9.

Something in the definition will have to change, however, because I believe Nack has it in his mind to allow a K (Kill) family member to hit and make a point at the same time. Contrast this with the definition of H (Hit), which requires a loose hit.

J (Jump) Family

Without assumption, the play 13/5*/1* 8/4 can be Nactated in the underlined J (Jump) family.
