Making the five point is nice, but it doesn't address the core problem of our position; our Sam man is stuck behind a prime.

BTW, what's a 'college try'? It's not an idiom that's found its way into British English AFAIK. As I recall my student days, it would mean, 'doing the bare minimum of work to get a pass before heading down the Students' Union bar for a couple of pints and a game of pinball'.
