In Response To: problems with kit's site (Stick)

If you read my two followup to the other post, you'll have the answer for this. The only guaranteed way right now of getting GammounU is via IP address directly in the browser.

It works for you because it just so happens that your system was given the real GammonU IP address. Because of the way DNS is set up, it is possible that under certain conditions a request for GammonU can be the Fibs IP address (for the reason given in the other thread).

This is in fact an oversight on Kit and (possibly Patti). The one theory I have is that the FIBS server at one point maintained a copy of Kits site just in case (but was removed sometime in the past). So if Kits main site went down it would still be accessible on the FIBS server (Most browsers will attempt to try each IP address in a domain record until it finds one that works, and then it caches it for a period of time).

The other possibility is that it was never intended for GammonU to have the FIBS server IP addresses and the 2 IP addresses are simply a bug.

For the case in this thread, someone browser was given FIBS IP address for GammonU. It may work for you, but it may not work for everyone.

If you want to learn more about this phenomenon you can read this Wiki article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Load_balancing_(computing) . You will find a section on DNS load balancing and multiple IP addresses.
