Wow! Thank you all for your quick feedback and advice. All very useful esp. kruidenbuiltje, clem and Casper for the extra detail. I have my first live tourney in Brighton UK this weekend so am cramming as much as possible :)
You are all right to point out that the it depends on the timing, opponents structure and advancement etc but I was kind of thinking about when I get hit multiple times very early on in the game (after an early failed attempt to slot and point on my 5 point perhaps, or suffering an early double hit somehow). So I have a few pieces back in my opponents (empty-ish) home board, and I have a choice on how best to structure them. Sorry for my ill-defined question.
Anyways, in this very early and open situation where adopting a backgame seems like the natural thing to do I will now aim for 2-4, 1-3, 2-3 or 1-4 more or less in that preference if the dice allow - there seems to be some agreement that these are generally good pairs of points to hold.
I will also try and get hold of Walter Trice's book and read the tuts at http://www.bkgm.com/articles/page02.html#back_games
kruidenbuiltje: i am also interested on where you found or calculated these figures - 'A 1-3 2-3 1-4 2-4 backgame need a timing of resp. 59, 48, 48, 43.' Is this from a specific book or tutorial? Sounds like something I should read (once I learn to pipcount)
Thanks again all!
