Thanks Stick and Casper.. 'not seeking a backgame' and advancing is very good advice that I have heard elsewhere as well. I just had some kind of n00b theory that occasionally, in certain situations, it might be of long term benefit to voluntarily adopt an early 'controlled' and 'natural' backgame mode (perhaps after a disasterous blot blitz, or a failed grab for my 5 point). Opposed to a reliance on the fickle whim of the dice to give me a desirable 2 point fortification later on when my opponent has continued to roll high/well and is now occupying those favoured backgame points. Then if I focus on manipulating timing and making some sort of prime at the other end, if and when the shot is generated I should be ready for it. I'm probably very mistaken! But I will experiment with this theory at DMP if these rare circumstances arise. Cheers!
