"Root" is an American word meaning, as best I understand it, "to support", "to cheer" or "to hope for". Therefore a "root" number is a roll that you'd desperately like to see come out of the cup.
It's nothing to do with maths, or the support structure of plants (which is what I'd assumed). Apparently, according the song "Take me out to the ball park", one should "root, root, root for the home team".
But maybe you'd be better off with a definition from a native speaker of that language.
