The fact that this is definitely a “pay-later” circumstance limits the choices. Rip one checker, and leave a gap? Or clear from the rear, leaving an ugly distribution? Normally, picking up the rear point is safer than creating a gap. Is that the case here? It does not appear so. After 5/4 5/2, we will leave a blot when our next roll is 66 55 44 33 65 64 63 61 54 53 51 43 41. That is 22 rolls out of 36. The only ones that do not blot are any 2, plus 11 31. Furthermore, when we do leave a blot on the 4pt and survive, many variations force another on the 3pt on the following turn.
Pulling a checker creates a much more stable situation, with the added bonus of getting that much closer to winning a gammon. After 3/2 3/off, there are only 16 numbers that force exposure: 64 62 54 52 43 41 32 21. Plus, when we leave a blot and are missed, cleaning up is much easier.
My vote: 3/2, 3/off
