I know that GNU uses a separate neural net to evaluate backgames than it does to evaluate more common-looking positions.

This is not true. GNubg has three neural nets:

  1. The race net, for when contact is broken.
  2. The crashed net, for positions where one side is heavily crunched.
  3. The contact net, for everything else, including backgames.

It is reported that Snowie has seven different nets, one of which is probably a backgame net.
