When I have taken photos of players at tournaments, most people knew I was a reporter and even posed (smiled) for the camera. In the last decade or so, while walking around the tournament rooms snapping shots, only on two occasions, both in Europe, did a player lift up their hand to stop me or say something like "no photos", which I, of course, respected.
Casper, you're right though, laws are different depending on the country but if I decide to use photos of players on IBGDB.com they'll likely be of players that I have met personally, have an acquaintance with or I have published elsewhere before. They will be players that already get published quite regularly in backgammon magazines and newsletters. I doubt a single one will object and if they do, I'll remove the photo.
OFF TOPIC: When I started in journalism back in the 1970s at the old Montreal Sunday Express newspaper, we were told by our editors that a photo taken of anyone in a public place can legally be used in a publication.
That means, for example, that if Joe Blow or even a famous celebrity is walking on a street in New York City and you take their photo (even if you caught the person at an embarassing moment), you can use it, unless you are using it to advertise something.
It seems this law still applies in North America, check out this case and the subsequent comments: http://photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=001oT6
However, when submitting photos to Wikipedia although it says something similar, they do warn you to check the local law of the country (which is likely what Casper refers to):
The consensus on Commons (subject to any local law to the contrary) is that the subject's consent is not usually needed for a straightforward photograph of an identifiable individual taken in a public place, but is usually needed for such a photograph taken in a private place.
