One More Post about Clocks

You must clock certain matches to keep the tournament flowing. The more I play the more I hope that all my matches are clocked. If they're not, I feel sorry for the TD. The more I learn the longer I take OtB in backgammon, if you don't have me on a clock I will take all the live long day and feel no regret. I need to be kept on a clock or the tournament will suffer. It is also advantageous to my opponent that I'm on a clock.
OTOH, I had three or four Novice players ask me to put matches in their division on the clock. I just refused to do that altogether. I don't think novices should be put on the clock.
You should have put them on the practice clock so that timing out meant nothing but they would become familiar with the mechanics of it for when they move up.
As for those who time out, I never feel empathy. They knew going in. How on earth someone times out is beyond me and if it happens it's all on that person, they have nothing to complain about, they knew going in.
